Okay everyone, I know that most of the time you come to check out my blog when you want to laugh, be mildly entertained, or see some sexy pics ;) But once in awhile I feel the need to get serious…

Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day (well it’s generally anytime between Sept 18-20, depending on location..), Although it’s a sad & depressing topic that causes a lot of anger for most people, I think that makes it even more important to acknowledge that this sort of thing is happening. You don’t have to be a dog or cat lover to understand that animal abuse and neglect is wrong. No living creature should have to suffer like that, especially simply so that someone can make a greater profit from animal breeding. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach… and VERY ANGRY!

I’m not asking you guys to donate money or start a riot in the streets or anything extreme like that, it would just be nice if you could pass this information on to friends, coworkers or family members who may not be aware of the cruel and inhumane conditions of puppy mills. (Especially  if you know anyone who is considering buying a new pet!!)

There are a few simple & basic things to keep in mind, which is what Awareness Day is all about:

“1. We ask that everyone boycott pet stores that sell pets. Not only should you not buy a puppy but should not buy supplies or food at these stores. Most of the animals for sale at Petland, PetWorld & other similar shops are purchased from puppy mills.

2. Adopt your next pet, go to a reputable rescue group or shelter.

3. Spay and Neuter your pets. Shelters are filled with homeless dogs and cats, and there simply aren’t enough homes to go around.” (The more puppies & kittens that end up on the streets = more animals being euthanized.)

If you want a pedigree dog, odds of finding one at a rescue shelter are pretty low.. it IS okay to get your pet from a breeder, but please do your research first!! Look online for important factors to consider before choosing a breeder, so you know what questions to ask and can be sure you aren’t supporting a “puppy mill in disguise”.
